A Saints statement read: “We would like to express our thanks to Mark and his staff for all of their efforts during their time at St Marys.“The search for a new manager to take the club forward is already under way.”Hughes signed a new three-year contract in the summer having guided the club to safety after replacingMauricio Pellegrino on a short-term deal in March. But Southampton have won just one of their 14 games this season and, following the2-2 draw at home against Manchester United on Saturday, are sitting 18th in the Premier League table.Former goalkeeper and first-team assistant coach Kelvin Davis, who played over 300 times for the club, has been placed in caretaker charge for Wednesday’s clash with Tottenham at Wembley.Quique Sanchez Flores,Paulo Sousa and Ralph Hasenhuttl are among the bookmakers favourites to replace Hughes on a permanent basis.Hughes, who played for the club in the late 1990s, won just five of his 26 games in charge of Southampton. While a 2-2 draw against Manchester United doesn’t seem like the biggest setback, the Saintswere leading that game 2-0 and that is symptomatic of some of their problems this season.During Hughes’ tenure they dropped 20 points from winning positions, while the 12 goals scored in 14 games this term has also been an obvious hindrance.
